Ιn June 2009 we started making some efforts to control the population of cats that were living in Floisvos Park, in the area of Palaio Faliro.
First outcome: Cats popping up everywhere, in huge numbers, feral cats, kittens with sore eyes, adult cats that were only bones. Complete chaos. Utter disappointment. Kittle by little, we got used to the situation. We didn’t know anything about capturing feral cats, it took us some time, but after a while, we had our first positive results. Putting our determination to help those animals above everything else, our effort became more systematic, became an everyday reality for us. Non-stop, in heat and cold, with rain, we were always there for them. We never were, are, and never will be a club or an association, we do not even have an official name. But the cats and kittens we take care of have: they are the Floisvos Cats. Those cats have filled us with sadness, happiness, sorrow, stress, mixed feelings. With true animal friends’ help we have managed to expand our effort to other areas too, providing our favorite cats with a better future. That is how we move on, just like the way we started: a bunch of crazy cat fanciers who –regardless of the circumstances- are on the run for help for those animals. Without state funds, without official financial help. Unfortunately apart from the cats we haven’t managed to neuter and are still having kittens, we also have “help” from some “nice” fellow-citizens who believe that because there are some people taking care of the animals, they can dump their unwanted kittens, stray kittens they have found and cannot keep, cats that they find too “boring” to keep any more. Most of those cats do not manage to survive, some of them are drowned as they are not familiar with the rocks, some of them are found dead, eaten by dogs and some simply do not survive the hardships. The same happens with the kittens that are born there.
Our first year results summed up to 60 cats neutered and 15 adoptions in Floisvos Park and another 48 cats neutered in other areas. During the second year we had 150 cats neutered and 40 cats were adopted. It was a tough year, with a lot of stress and hard work. A lot of cats needed medical treatment, a lot of beloved cats have lost the battle, a lot of others just disappeared.
The thought of quitting has crossed our mind a lot of times. We sometimes thought we are just making a hole in the water and we are not really making any difference. But every time we take a look at the eyes of the cats we have helped, every time we see a photo of a cat that has been saved from the streets and now lives safe and happy in its new home, every time we pet a cat that almost died, we know that we will never stop trying.
Our third year is ending with fewer neutered cats than last year, almost 100. Unfortunately the cats that needed medical treatment were too many, as well as the cats and kittens that needed foster homes, so we had to focus on them and we have already spent all our funds on vet care.
We do not receive funds from anywhere, we cover everything on our expence, and with some people’s -who acknowledge what we do- help.
What we really need, apart from financial help, is foster homes. We have surpassed our ability to provide temporary homes for those animals long ago, and at the moment we foster over 60 kittens looking for a home.We are looking for people that can even open a small room in their homes,so that more animals can be saved from the streets and sure death.
